Welcome to Wesley Nutraceuticals
Canine Cognitive Dysfunction is a debilitating condition that can start to affect dogs as early as 7-8 years of age. This condition is closely related to Alzheimers disease in humans in that it is caused by deposits of β-amyloid and tau proteins in brain tissue. These substances interrupt normal impulses and communication between neurons leading to loss of memory, changes in behavior, anxiety, fear related behaviors and confusion. There are many factors involved in development of this disease and not all are fully understood, however, many are related to metabolic disturbances, loss of skeletal muscle and genetics. Though natural supplements are not adequate to fully control this condition, if detected by your veterinarian, we can slow the progression and mitigate some of the clinical signs. Reduction of the development of some of the dangerous proteins that “clog” the brain, daily moderate to intense exercise, pain control for those with arthritis and maintenance of a good body condition can all slow the progression of this disease and provide a good quality of life for our dogs
As a veterinarian with decades of experience in canine health, we have developed a natural supplement to effectively assist in managing cognitive dysfunction in dogs. Creatine – As our dogs age, they may develop arthritis and in turn start to lose vital skeletal muscle mass. This is detrimental to their mobility, comfort, happiness, immune system and brain function. Skeletal muscle is our largest endocrine organ! Myokines made by skeletal muscle are involved in weight control, insulin sensitivity, controlling inflammation, suppressing tumor growth, controlling Tau protein and β-amyloid and improving cognitive function. Studies have shown that the metabolic processes of skeletal muscle when exercised can reduce amyloid deposits in the brain. Creatine helps maintain and build muscle by supplying much needed energy in the form of ATP to the muscle cells. Creatine is also known to be neuroprotective (prevent neural cell death), especially to older individuals with metabolic stress.
Phosphatidylserine - Phosphatidylserine is a fatty substance called a phospholipid that plays a role in mental sharpness and memory. Phosphatidylserine is reduced as animal age potentially leading to nerve cell biochemical alterations and impairment of cognitive function. Supplementation of phosphatidylserine has been shown to restore cognitive function and short term memory in aged patients.
S-Adenosyl-mehtionine - SAMe is a multfunction supplement. It is found naturally in the body and influences many cell processes including DNA synthesis, hepatic protection, amino acid metabolism and immune response. There are studies that suggest that SAMe as effective as anti-depressants in treating mild to moderate depression. Many studies have revealed that cognitive impairment can be significantly reversed by supplementation with SAMe. Research has also revealed that SAMe was nearly as effective as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for reduciton of pain, swelling and stiffness related to arthritis.
Vitamin E – Vitamin E helps to slow the progression of cognitive impairment by protecting the brain from neurodegeneration.
L-carnitine - L-carnitine is known to decrease the rate of cognitive deterioration by stabilizing cell membranes and enhancing mitochondrial function.
Resveratrol – Resveratrol helps to regulate immune function in dogs and reduce a phenomenon called oxidate burst. This is process where specific white blood cells release large quantities of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which can damage host cells. ROS are thought to play a role in cognitive dysfunction in geriatric patients.
Coenzyme Q10 – Coenzyme Q10 is a supplement which can improve memory skills and cognitive function by reducing neurologic oxidative stress.
Lecithin – Patients with cognitive dysfunction are shown to have reduced levels of acetylcholine in the brain which is an important neurotransmitter. Lecithin is a natural, dietary source of choline and it is suggested that it may help with learning and memory in patients with cognitive impairment.
